Standing On The Sun In San Juan

Colorful…Eclectic…

Fresh air…Cool breeze…Clear water…

That’s the only way I can express the beauty of this Island.

I had less than twenty hours to see the world around me, and San Juan was where my travels brought me. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew there would be plenty of water, and even more sun.

My first time in Puerto Rico was sure to be fun, and when we landed and I walked into my hotel room for the evening I couldn’t wait until morning to go on my own little adventure.

But first, I had to make it through the night. The air felt like silk running across my skin. It was humid, but it was like the perfect amount of humidity. I turned off the air in the room and opened my balcony door to bring in the fresh air. Everyone talked about how they slept with their doors open, but I wasn’t on that level, because I had already seen the lizards San Juan had to offer, and I didn’t want them thinking they were welcomed inside my room. Needless to say, right before I went to sleep the balcony door was closed, and I slept peacefully.

The sun wasted no time in rising and shinning bright. I was up at six looking around my room for understanding. Especially since I had just went to bed at two a.m. I looked out on my balcony and people had already started their days. I felt like I was late to the party. It was truly beautiful outside.

I was asked this question a lot once I got back home. I took my time roaming the city around me. I tried to be as careful as possible because I knew I looked liked either a tourist, or extreme photographer holding my cameras, lenses and such.

I went out around ten that morning, and the city seemed so peaceful. Many people were heading to the beach, children played at the local playground, and I saw young men practicing their sports. It was like a normal day in the neighborhood, and it was nice to people watch.

What to wear?

I wouldn’t pack any jeans. Only shorts, breathable shirts, skirts, and maxi dresses. Also be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen. The sun here will burn you and have no regrets about it.

Shoes! Every girl loves sandals, but if you plan to do some walking pack a good shoe with arch support. Leave the sandals for the beach. I walked around in my cute sandals, and the bottom of my feet felt raw after about a half hour of walking. Learn from my mistakes, wear your good shoe around the city and your sandals for the beach. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Lastly, San Juan is a part of America, so their currency is American. That was another question I kept getting. Puerto Rico is so Americanized, you may clutch your imaginary pearls. I saw the Coach Outlet, Marshalls, Burger King and Fogo De Choa. Yup. Yup, I did! I felt right at home.

My time in the San Juan Islands was delightful. I wish I could have gone snorkeling or kayaking *sigh* maybe next time.  If you ever find yourself hanging out in the islands come back and let me know about your experience. 🙂

BOOK REVIEW: A BLACK GIRL’S GUIDE TO DATING WHITE MEN

A Black Girl’s Guide to Dating White Men– Niki McElroy

BlackwomanWhiteMen

I have a strong interest in sociology and human relationships (interracial relationships in America in particular), and I came across this book while browsing at the library. Since it is thin, I figured I would be able to finish it rather quickly. Fortunately, it didn’t take more than 1.5 hours to work my way through this “gem.” And honestly, I would be upset if I had spent any more time studying this guide on How to Be A Foolish Black Woman  (ok, I might have taken some liberty with my rendition of the title).

But honestly, I think this book truly deserves a negative rating – it is horrendous. In addition to the stylistic and grammatical errors that run rampant, the actual content of the book is so stereotypical and prejudiced – it is hard not to call the book trash.

Truthfully, I don’t want to throw too much shade at Niki, but I was continually stunned by how ignorant the author sounds. While I commend her for encouraging black women to be more open to finding love outside of their race, the manner in which she does so is borderline appalling. She speaks about white men as if she is a hunter on safari looking for a white tiger, and she tries to rope the reader into her hunt by giving out tips and tricks for how to catch ‘em.

The cover display is two half-naked people feeling each other up and this pretty much sums up everything you need to know about this guide — it just is not to be taken seriously. After reading the first page, I honestly thought this was satire, but unfortunately, the author is beyond serious with her overplayed stereotypes of black and white people. She talks to black women as though they are all angry, culturally incompetent, and thirsty enough to use her tactics to find the all-revered white man. She speaks of white men as though they are all shy and intimidated when it comes to talking with black women and she has created three neat categories to place them into (the businessman, the jock, and the edgy guy/artist). The gross generalizations get old quickly.

I also took issue with the pictures she included. They were poor quality and of no relevance, whatsoever. I suppose she adds pictures of random white men and women who are supposed to be dating, because it is a guide and she does want readers to learn something from her book. So at the very least, you can walk away saying you know what a black woman and white man look like when they are sitting with each other.  The pictures are also interesting because she seems to flaunt these couples as people you should know, but when you look at them and read the captions, you realize very quickly that you definitely do not know any of these “super successful white men” and random black ladies. I mean seriously, these people are not even halfway relevant. I mean who is Leonardo Attolini? I have never heard of him. I googled him and still couldn’t find anything.) Not to mention the fact that some of the white guys she features look like men that rolled straight off the Jersey Shore – I’m reading this book thinking to myself, “Niki, you can keep that.” But I guess it’s none of my business if women want to be with Pauly D….

I am sure there is a certain audience that would benefit from reading this book. (Isn’t there always something for everyone?) The only potential positive I see is that maybe some women will be encouraged to open their minds and hearts to finding love outside their race.

I could give you a much shorter summary of this guide in one phrase, “Girl, Bye!” I’m not kidding.

large

I sent excerpts to my boyfriend (who on a semi-related note is white), because I was literally tearing up from laughing so hard.

Here are some of the quotes I sent him along with my commentary:

  • “White men don’t typically cook for themselves and would rather go out while still enjoying a lovely dinner with a desirable ambiance.” (Yeah, all those white men I see at the local Chinese takeout…. They really enjoy the lovely dinner and desirable ambiance.)
  • “There are many different locations white men frequent. I find that they are creatures of habit, so if there is a place they enjoy, you can catch them there over and over again.” (She sounds like the Crocodile Hunter here….)
  •  “Or teach yourself to enjoy a little Coldplay, John Mayer, or James Blunt. It’s actually pretty good music and you may find yourself liking it better than this new wave of 21st century hip hop.” (Are we still on the whole black people music and white people music thing? This is just so so so played out. And James Blunt is terrible. But I did get that new Coldplay CD though!)
  •  “To not look ‘tacky’, unless it’s in combination with a more delectable dish, stay away from the California Roll. It’s very cliché for blacks to order the simple rolls, just as we do the sweet wines.” (I think Boo would be happier if I got simple rolls, it’d keep more dollars in his pocket! J)

There are a plethora of books that give the topic of interracial dating a much more thoughtful and enlightening treatment than this one. For starters, I recommend “Is Marriage for White People?” by Ralph Richard Banks and “Don’t Bring Home A White Boy” by Karyn Langhorne Folan.

EVENT RECAP! CHRISETTE MICHELLE & MARSHA AMBROSIUS “FATHER’S DAY EXPLOSION

Last weekend, I was blessed to cover the father’s day explosion concert headlining Chrisette Michelle and Marsha Ambrosius, in Montgomery, Al. Hosted by Ms. Talesa J. Harris, and Lauren Walker.

Honestly, going into this concert, I was a bit biased. I absolutely love Chrisette Michelle, and I love to see her perform live. To me, her voice is stunning, so you can imagine who I was really there to see. It was beautiful that in the essence of Father’s Day, Chrisette’s father introduced her. It was good to see that father-daughter love. As Chrisette began to sing, she gave an amazing heart-warming performance. When she sings, she speaks to your soul, kind of like Ledisi. She sang some of her classics, like “Blame It On Me” and some of her newer songs like “10 Foot Stilettos.”

This was my first time seeing Marsha Ambrosius perform live, but she has a slew of songs that I am a fan of, dating back to her Floetry days. She sang everything too! From “Getting Late,” “Say Yes,” “Late Nights & Early Mornings,” and my favorite “Hope She Cheats on You.” When Marsha hit the stage she owned it in a different way. It was like girl talk through music. It was good seeing her in her element. She was amazing as she went from singing, to playing her keyboard, to dancing. She truly had fun on stage and her energy flowed throughout the entire room! Honestly, I would love to see Marsha perform again. She gave life in her performance.

Both of these ladies were inspirational in their performances, and those in attendance can co-sign me on that one.

EATING WITH ERICA’S LITTLE BLACK DRESS

Over the weekend, Erica of Eating With Erica hosted a Little Black Dress Brunch at SaltYard in Buckhead. She gathered many women to put on their favorite little black dress, eat and have fun.

We were treated to a four course meal. I had a kale salad, French toast with blueberry pecan maple syrup (homemade), I skipped the third course from being extremely full, and for desert I had the chocolate nemesis. The best part were the bottomless mimosas…what a great evening.

40 YEARS OF FABULOUS! WITH THREE-13 SALON, SPA & BOUTIQUE

Anniversary-Three-13Over the weekend, I helped celebrate the 40th Ruby Anniversary of Three-13 Salon, Spa & Boutique in Marietta, Georgia. When I walked in, it looked like organized confusion, because there was so much going on, and even more things to do. I wasn’t sure if I could keep up, and I was told it is always crazy busy on the weekends, and I believe them. Although there was so much going on for this happy occasion, the time I spent at Three-13 was so exciting, yet relaxing at the same time.

I was given the opportunity to have a facial done by their Repechage International Educator, Lauren Streeter. Repechage is the only skincare line they carry, because it’s so amazing. I was so excited about this experience, because I cannot remember the last time I had a facial. I, of course, came with an unwashed face, because I wanted Lauren to see my skin in it’s true element, so that she could advise me for my future skincare.

imVebPCv9e3DbLFx-D5dUlYJ19FFPdpHoyoWDV8sNwEWhen it was time for me to go to the back, I was given a locker for my clothes, a robe, and flip flops to wear. There was a sweet young lady who waited for me, and when I was comfortable in my new Three-13 attire, she took me to another young lady who gave me a parrafin wax on my hands. This is a warm wax, that feels luxurious. I was given a few scents to choose from, I decided on coconut-melon, and it smelled amazing. I was told to wash my hands, and then to place my hands flat in the warm wax. She wrapped my hands in bags, and then I placed my hands in what seemed to look like oven mitts. After my hands were wrapped in warmth, I was taken to the “Quiet Zone.”

When I walked into my quiet room, I met a woman with flawless skin; it was the Repechage educator, Lauren.  She was really sweet.  When the warm wax had hardened, Lauren slide the wax off of my hands, and they looked, and felt great. My hands were rejuvenated, they glowed, and they were so smooth. She than accessed my skin, and told me that I had pretty good skin, but it was oily. She told me that, that can be a great thing for me. She said that oilier skin, like mines, ages slower. So my chances for getting things like crows feet, and wrinkles are less likely to occur. (Yay for me!)

After our talk, I laid down, under an electric blanket, and she began to cleanse my face. Then she did a Honey & Almond Scrub, by Repechage. Made with pure honey, oatmeal, and almond meal, the scrub was very light, but it made my skin feel very clean and fresh.

When my scrub was done, she wrapped my face in heated towels, infused with Jasmine. It was so soothing. My skin was already starting to glow.

After all of this, there was still more to do. She pulled out this huge machine, that is known as a 7-in-1, and told me that we would be doing a galvanic.  She placed a cool face mask on me, that would be used with the galvanic to push moisture into my face. This was a little scary for me, since I couldn’t see it happening. I wasn’t allowed to move, because it could cause shock, and I had to hold onto a piece of metal, and it felt like little shock waves hitting my face. Overall, it wasn’t bad, and I enjoyed the experience.

Lauren was the absolute best, and made me feel comfortable the entire time. She answered all of my questions, and when she finished working her magic, my skin felt clean, fresh, and light. She pulled all of the dirt out of my face. My skin-tone looked even, more defined, and tighter. I LOVE IT! Her advice to me was that I should get a facial at least once a month, and I to continue my at-home-care as well.I do just about eveything from masks, exfoliates, and daily cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.

My experience at Three-13 was just beautiful. I was treated like a goddess, but this wasn’t just the “Brittney Treatment” they treat every guest as the best. They have over one-hundred beauty gods that work in Three-13, and they are all busy, and very well educated on all things beauty. I was given a tour by an awesome guy, Jason, and he took me to all of the different stations within Three-13. There is a make-up bar, a color treatment area, a cut and style area, shampoo room, intimate manicure and pedicure rooms, and party rooms.

They have it all!

They are also having fabulous contests, giveaways, and specials going on for their 40th anniversary. So be sure to visit them!

EVENT RECAP: SOMETING LIKE CRAZY WITH TAYLOR CHARISSE

On Monday, April 28, Taylor Charisse launched her new blog, Something Like Crazy, at the Historic M Rich Building, in Downtown Atlanta. Sprite Pour Reporter, Charlotte Rose hosted the event.

Taylor Charisse’s purpose is to help people realize if they are alive or just living, which made this high-end blog launch like none other. With a maxed out guest list, if you are one for living life with no boundaries, a lover of reading, and watching extraordinary video, this event was the place to be.

Taylor Charisse showed a glimpse of her life through video. She did it all, from zip-lining, swimming with dolphins, sky-diving, and enjoying life in different countries. It was simply amazing. She also spoke on being sarcastic, responding to negativity because of her sarcasm, and satire from her blog, as well as opening up to us about her personal life. She works hard! With a full-time job, she still keeps up with her schoolwork,  and still makes time for living her best life.

A launch like this wouldn’t be complete without wonderful sponsors. Lenox Cupcakes came out with mini cupcakes ranging from Red Velvet, Pink Lemonade (my favorite), Chocolate, Carrot and so much more! Miss Jessie’s came with the hair products, Voscato brought the drinks, and there were chocolate covered strawberries and whipped cream to enhance the experience.

Be sure to stay up to date with Taylor Charisse, I am sure there are more things to come that will blow you away. Also, be sure to tune into Erica Dias of The B Firm for more amazing events. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
